About Transmission and Distribution
Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.
The Sr. Structural Engineer 4 will work in Transmission Engineering’s Poles and Towers Structural Analysis Group to provide transmission and distribution structural expertise and leadership to SCE’s internal and external clients.
Engineer 4 will typically take a lead role on various initiatives and lead teams. The role expects broad structural and line design expertise related to all types of distribution and transmission lines.
The Structural Group performs a variety of engineering tasks in support of: transmission line design and construction; transmission line structure design, selection, and procurement; Development of Standards and specifications for transmission and pole line design and construction; transmission line design support related to structures, structural analysis, modification and repair of towers and poles on the SCE system. In addition, the Structural Group leads the development of new structure types, and use of new or enhanced materials; Analysis of regulatory rule changes relating to structures; and distribution pole line software support, and testing. Tasks can be associated with large projects, line operation and maintenance, regulatory compliance, standards development and support, and overall subject matter expertise related to structures.
Duties include structural analysis and design recommendations for existing and new towers or poles using PLS-Cadd, PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole and SAP2000.
Perform analysis and design of structure foundations.
Analysis, Design and Procurement of materials for tower and pole modifications
Creation and Updating of Design and Construction Standards related to overhead structures
Use of Finite Element Analysis tools for line and structure modelling
Support risk analysis and strategy recommendation development for standards and procedure updates
Interaction with technical and compliance team
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering
Nine years or more of experience as an engineer
Six years or more of experience in transmission line design with emphasis on utility overhead structure and foundation design analysis.
Strong knowledge of utility lattice steel, tubular steel, and wood structure design and application.
Experience with PLS-Cadd, PLS-Tower, and PLS-Pole skills.
Thorough knowledge of contents and application of ASCE-10 and ASCE MOP 74
California PE License – Civil
Master’s Degree in Engineering – Structural Emphasis
Engineering experience with Electric Utility Distribution and Transmission Systems using California GO95 or NESC rules.
Engineering experience using SAP2000
