Position Overview :

Southern California Edison’s Law Department handles all legal issues affecting the utility. This position will handle a wide range of regulatory proceedings for the company in a lead counsel capacity and will report to a Director and Managing Attorney. The successful candidate will be part of a small team of attorneys and must be able to work closely and independently with a diverse range of internal clients on all aspects of regulatory law. The candidate also must be able to direct and manage outside counsel retained to support the company’s legal needs. The successful candidate will advise and represent the Company on complex regulatory, litigation, compliance and enforcement matters, including those arising under federal, California, and/or other state laws and regulations. This position will also provide legal support to SCE Organizational Units and Senior Management, while collaborating with other Company representatives on decisions that impact utility operations.

Typical Responsibilities include :

  • Advising internal client organizations regarding compliance with applicable federal, state, and local statutes, regulations and policies.

  • Representing the Company before regulatory and enforcement agencies in settlement conferences, hearings, and other regulatory processes.

  • Interfacing with SCE personnel in other departments and external third parties to gather information pertaining to highly complex legal, technical, and/or sensitive issues.

  • Drafting and preparing regulatory filings, testimony, and reports.

  • Contributing to cross-functional or departmental projects and teams.

  • Partnering with Company transactional attorneys and diverse internal stakeholders to prepare and negotiate provisions of transactional documents

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited nationally recognized law school.

  • Current member of the State Bar of California or ability to obtain such qualification.

  • Two to seven years of experience practicing regulatory or litigation law or equivalent regulatory experience. Experience can be at law firm, corporate in-house setting, governmental authority, or a combination.

Desired Qualifications :

  • Top academic credentials.

  • J. D.from a top-tier law school.

  • Two to four years of experience practicing regulatory or litigation law or equivalent regulatory experience. Experience can be at law firm, corporate in-house setting, governmental authority, or a combination.

  • Experience in the utility or energy industry is preferred, but not required.

  • Experience interacting with federal, state, or local agencies on administrative or regulatory issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently handle proceedings as lead attorney in matters before regulatory agencies, such as the California Public Utilities Commission or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or first chair-level court experience.

  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical ability to provide legal advice within a business context.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong analytical ability.

  • Ability to simultaneously manage many assignments, work quickly and effectively under pressure, and prioritize activities and risk.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team including an ability to promote positive cooperation within the legal team, internal clients, and outside counsel.
