Position Overview:

The Principal Manager, Technical Accounting, is responsible for the strategic direction of all technical accounting efforts including implementing new guidance and analyzing significant and unusual transactions. The Principal Manager, Technical Accounting, provides guidance, leadership, and drafting expertise to the SEC reporting team, with emphasis around new accounting pronouncements and complex transactions. The individual explains accounting concepts to a variety of financial and non-financial audiences at all levels including executive management, external auditors, and staff. As a leader, the Principal Manager, Technical Accounting is also responsible for developing technical accounting staff and supporting the development of knowledge across the department.

Responsibilities to include:

  • Provide technical accounting expertise, position papers, and research to define appropriate accounting treatment

  • Critically analyze agreements and transactions to ensure they meet intended business objectives

  • Hire, develop, and retain top talent; develop accounting knowledge across the department

  • Draft and review SEC financial statements and disclosures, develop new disclosures

  • Build strong partnerships with a variety of stakeholders including with Treasury, Operational Finance, Energy Procurement, Internal Audit, and Tax

  • Represent the company in industry organizations, serving as an accounting specialist

  • Interpret and apply internal policies, SOX guidance, US GAAP and other regulations


Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in accounting, economics, business or related discipline

  • CPA required (active or inactive)

  • 5+ years in public accounting/Big 4 managing audits of public companies

  • 7 total years of work experience

  • Clear and concise written and verbal communications

Desired Qualifications:

  • 10 to 15 years total work experience

  • Experience with technical accounting topics including but not limited to revenue recognition, lease accounting, derivatives, pensions, variable interest entities, consolidation, and impairment

  • Expertise with Regulation S-X and S-K

  • Expertise with SOX and internal controls

  • Previous experience running an accounting policy team

  • Previous experience leading an SEC reporting team

  • Experience working on multiple projects with accuracy and efficiency, while keeping to deadlines

  • Experience with audits of 401k and benefit plans

  • Experience working for an utility company applying regulatory accounting concepts


  • The primary work location for this position is Rosemead, CA
