Southern California Edison Deployment Readiness Engineer in Westminster, California
ENERGY FOR WHAT’S AHEAD
Are you looking to make a difference in your career? We’re working on smarter grids, cleaner energy and tools to help people manage energy more efficiently.
Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.
In SCE’s 2018 General Rate Case, we proposed our first ever Grid Modernization program comprised of various grid technologies, software tools, and a telecommunications infrastructure overhaul aimed at enhancing the capabilities of our existing grid to significantly improve grid reliability while preparing the grid for a future with high DER penetration in the process. Because of the interdependencies between all of the subparts of the grid modernization program, the success of the program as a whole is dependent on many of the proposed solutions being implemented simultaneously and within a timeline such that benefits from deployment can be demonstrated in time for the 2021 GRC cycle. Implementation of the Grid Modernization program is not just about deployment of new grid technologies, but also consideration of the human and business process aspects that support those technologies.
Deployment Readiness, an organization within Grid Modernization, is focused on facilitating the transition of piloted grid technologies into the deployment stage by working with stakeholders to identify critical impacts from modernizing the grid including impacts to job functions, training & skillset requirements, and existing cross functional business processes. In addition, the Deployment Readiness team seeks to help stakeholders prepare for change by providing necessary materials to craft both enterprise and tailored communication content to educate the workforce on Grid Modernization.
New grid technologies that require integration between hardware, software, and telecomm components can be especially challenging to implement. More so, these types of technologies can be especially difficult to grasp how they can and will change day to day job functions. The successful candidate for this position would be responsible for building out a holistic view of technology impacts to stakeholder groups, consulting on training & communication material development, and collaborating with stakeholders across the company to educate and prepare for Grid Modernization impacts.
Cross collaboration between stakeholders and subject matter experts to prepare the SCE workforce for the implementation of new grid technologies development & transition efforts to align new distribution automation equipment with Grid Modernization objectives and facilitate ease of integration into planning & operations
Building out Day in the Life examples of how new grid technologies will affect existing job functions across T&D and more broadly throughout SCE
Developing and delivering communication material on engineering concepts & functions of new grid technologies intended for non-engineering and non-technical audiences
Working with Human Resource partners to develop a comprehensive strategy on supporting the skillset evolution necessary to support changes with the grid of the future
Executing on companywide education of Grid Modernization including its objectives, associated technology, and timelines
Collaborate with stakeholder groups across the company to develop a deep understanding of department roles relevant to Grid Modernization
Evaluate proposed grid technology solutions to identify workforce impacts, if implemented, at SCE
Develop and maintain Day in the Life documentation for critically impacted stakeholder groups & job roles
Advise stakeholder groups through activities including business process updates, change management efforts, and job function evaluation
Provide engineering support on key implementation activities
